Building a character in this setting might be challenging, as there are a few major questions to answer, there are some class restrictions in place, and your character will be inhabiting a world different from the one they are used to.

As such, it’s important that your character has some level of history to them - ties to the Mainland, family, friends, co-workers, brothers-in-arms, fellows, and the like. When they become Banished, they are taken away from all of this.

The following notes are meant to guide you through a process of

  • Building a history for them
  • Creating a character that meshes well with the existing setting, and
  • Creating a character that can survive the harsh (but beautiful) lands of the Isles.

The main questions you should be able to answer (or eventually be able to) for your character are:

  • Where did they live?
  • Who were they on the Mainland?
  • What caused their banishment?
  • What pushes them to survive and persist through these hardships?
  • In their worst moments, what brings them hope?

Class Rules

Very Rare Classes

0 - 1 in the party, leaning towards 0 - discuss with your DM

  • The Psychic. Some escaped experiment of Behal’s, this class is vanishingly rare. There are terrible consequences for both the Psychic and its creators, and no one would understand their abilities, outside of Behal’s most loyal subjects.

Rare Classes

0 - 2 in the party - discuss with your DM

  • Religious classes like the Oracle, Cleric, and Champion are exceedingly rare. Whatever gods they worship are long forgotten, and only a tiny spark remains, meaning their abilities are hampered significantly.
  • Most spellcasting classes, including the Sorceror, Wizard, Necromancer and Alchemist, are not likely to find themselves on the Barges. Between the Immortals, they are some of the most sought after of professions, with Araxen poaching the soon-to-be-Banished all the way up until they day they are shipped off.

Uncommon Classes

No limit, but discuss with your DM

  • Some Occult and mixed classes, like the Thaumaturge and the Witch. They are outsiders, not trusted by the people, and considered strange and blasphemous by those who worship the Scripture.
  • Druids and Summoners. Similar to the Thaumaturge and the Witch, these are outsiders, though for different reasons - they worship spirits and the earth itself, and their philosophies are alien to the people who believe in the Immortals as gods.
